Choupo-Moting ruled out of Bayern’s clash against Manchester City

Bayern Munich’s Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting will not be travelling with the squad to face Manchester City in the Champions League quarter-final due to a knee injury. The 34-year-old striker came off the pitch complaining of the issue during the DFB Pokal quarter-final against Freiburg last Tuesday and was left out of the squad for the Bundesliga match against the same team on Saturday. Bayern’s top scorer this season, Choupo-Moting has registered 17 goals from 28 appearances in all three competitions.

Bayern’s striking department in crisis

Choupo-Moting was brought in as an understudy to Robert Lewandowski, who left for Barcelona at the end of the 2021-22 season. Since then, Bayern have brought in 17-year-old striker Mathys Tel from Rennes for £25 million, who is also currently nursing an injury. With no other recognised centre-forward options available, Choupo-Moting has been handed a starting role in the majority of Bayern’s games this season. Former Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry deputised up front in Choupo-Moting’s absence in the most recent game against Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Bayern’s chances against Manchester City

Bayern Munich’s chances of progressing to the semi-finals of the Champions League have been dealt a blow with the absence of Choupo-Moting. The German giants are already without Lewandowski and Tel, leaving them with limited options up front. However, Bayern still have a strong squad and will be looking to players like Thomas Muller and Leroy Sane to step up in the absence of their top scorer. Manchester City, on the other hand, are in fine form and will be looking to continue their impressive run in the competition.
